  • Hi Guy, you don't want to know how to setup a PBX (a telephone switchboard) but a public switched telephone network - a VoIP installation (modern) ?

  • You want to connect two modems locally?

You could look for an old ISDN PBX with internal analogue ports. Like this one:

and connect the modems to the internal ports.

I built the little PSTN in Thionville 2015 using two ISDN PBXes.

One was a Elmeg C46xe, the other was a Emmerich ISTEC1008.

The Istec's external S0 port was connected to the Elmeg's internal S0 port.

This S0 connection allows 2 concurrent connections between the two PBXes.

This setup has 14 analogue ports. Since the Elmeg is equipped with an additional 2xS0 module, it also allows ISDN TAs to be connected.

Connecting two (ore more) PBXes using an internal S0 port of one PBX as external S0 port for another PBX will not always work.

In my setup, it only works using an older firmware version in the Elmeg.
It would of cause be a better choice to use a single PBX with enough ports.

I just used, what I had by hand. :)

  • So that was also my thought, using an old PBX with more than 1 analogue port must be sufficient to "simulate" a telephone line.
