Vergleich Amstrad NC100 - NTS DreamWriter 325

  • Hi guys,

While looking for information on the DreamWriter 325 BASIC ROM I came across classic-computing.de.

I bought a BASIC ROM for the DW325 off of eBay and have read and saved the ROM image. Hopefully I can legally upload the image to Archive.org

Meanwhile I uploaded the manual to Archive.org. If you don't have it already, here's it is: https://archive.org/details/dr…er-325-instruction-manual

And not meant to be a shameless plug, but my friend in Australia has done his own comparison: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXlkNerzOvE

  • For those of you trying out the ROM, here is my friend's report on what he found:

On first boot it shows the same as my ROM.

To get to BASIC you press OGN for organiser, then WP to go to the next screen and select BASIC

BUT … there is some sort of difference between that ROM and mine … the first section look identical but Unix diff command says they differ … but not where.

Okay … downloaded any diff program … LOTs of differences!

It looks like both ROMs have BASIC but they are quite different … interesting

    Mine’s labelled DR3 (1.03) …

    Hope this helps. :)

  • Thank you sir!

Yes ... it seems that you have ROM version 2.0 or later.

My ROM is labelled DR3 (1.03) and advises that BASIC is coming in Vers 2.0. Mine also has a typing tutor instead of the communication application.

  • I was trying to find if there was a version string somewhere in the ROM to confirm that actual version. I did come across a diagnostic routine (tried to find similar earlier with random key presses during startup but no luck).

    ROM 1.03:

    Diagnostic 1.03.27 (960523) by NER

    ROM 2.??:

    Diagnostic 1.04 (930402) by NER

Newer version ... but older date ... interesting. Not sure how to trigger it yet ... it's near the "Terminal mode" code ...\

  • I can confirm that the BASIC EPROM also works fine in the DreamWriter T400.
Initially I didn't understand that you need to write the BASIC program with the embedded editor first, then use the file menu to store it, finally you can execute it in BASIC (and need to manually switch to the output screen). But obviously this is due to my lack of "hands on" experience with the Dreamwriter, not an issue of the BASIC EPROM ;)
