    Suche Kontakt. Bin Grufti :)
Wohne in der Nähe von Karlsruhe Pforzheim
    Kontakt über Emai fs@frist.de erwünscht

  • Thank you for posting these. (My apologies for not writing in German).

In the UK my highschool had a MAEL 4000 machine. This was donated to the school in the late 70s by Friends Provident Insurance company when they retired the machine. It was much older than your model, with some significant differences! Already by ~1980 it was very much obsolete. The machine was a single long desk, with disk and tape and console built-in to the desk. At one time it was in working order, although there didn't seem to be anything useful to be done with it and I never managed to program it to do anything useful... in the end, I regret, we trashed it (kids!).

    From memory:

    - The main output was a typewriter (hardcopy). You have a more modern CRT -- nice!

    - Additionally there was a programming console with individual keys for the opcodes, and a (Nixie?) display. CHM has one in their collection (https://www.computerhistory.or…ections/catalog/102669971) but apparently not the rest of the machine.

    - Memory was 4K core (persisted when power off).

    - Storage was 2x cassette tape, and 2x 8" floppy disks. Mostly the disks were useful for program storage, and the tapes for data.

They seem to be very rare now, I hope you have success getting it operational!

  • I look for a MAEL 4000. Do you have a print or pdf. My handbook "MAEL 4000 Bedienungselemente" miss the commands of DSR and DSW.

Is there a price for this machine?

  • Good morning to all,

    I’m leaving in Milan and I have @home a MAEL 4000 CPU + KBD.

It's a "long" story but I was a service engineer at SAGA (MAEL IT distributor).

Years after that experience (I was in AMPEX at that time) I've found an abandoned 4000 – I’ve asked for, and they gave it for free.

Years are gone, but I’ve kept the 4000 with me. On those “strange” days (COVID), forced stay @home I’ve tried to light up it again (of course with a VARIAC etc).

Unlucky isn’t working any more. Is doing something (basically some step when hit SST command), but the central nixie isn’t showing something “useful”. I’ve checked the tension I’ve found on CPU (+5, +12) and on KBD, and if I’m not wrong all are OK.

I have the user manual (the list of command explained in IT) but I don’t remember the functions of many boards. Especially where are the principals registers (R00, RIJ, R Output).

I suspect the 4000 is an “extension” of IME 86, and I’m studying the schematics principle of this desk calculator, but both machines are just far away each other, so is difficult to arrive @some point

I would like give the machine in working condition to some Computer Museum. Could anyone give me a help? Even just the schematics principle, ore any kind of helps or ideas to proceed.

    Many thanks for the attention

    Ciao Luigi

  • Ciao Luigi

as far as I know the MAEL 4000 was a TTL based 70s Mini-Computer and the IME 86 a transistor based system from the 60s.

MAEL viene di ROMA, IME di Milano...?

Maybe these italian pages or the people behind may help you?
