Schlauer Schachzug. Notwendig?

registered != buffered
Ähnlich aber nicht gleich.Habe die Frage eben ChatGPT beantworten lassen. Ob das stimmt ... tja
Q: What's the difference between buffered and registered memory?
A(ChatGPT):Buffered and registered memory are both types of memory modules used in computer systems, but they have some differences in terms of functionality and performance. Here's an overview of their characteristics:
Buffered Memory (also known as Fully Buffered DIMM or FB-DIMM):
1. Functionality: Buffered memory modules have an additional memory controller chip (buffer) between the memory chips and the memory controller on the motherboard. The buffer helps in reducing the electrical load and improving signal integrity.
2. Signal transmission: The buffer receives, amplifies, and retransmits the memory signals, allowing for better transmission of data between the memory modules and the memory controller.
3. Capacity and speed: Buffered memory modules can support higher memory capacities and operate at higher speeds compared to registered memory.
4. Latency: Buffered memory tends to have higher latency (slightly longer access times) due to the additional processing required by the buffer chip.
5. Compatibility: Buffered memory modules are generally not backward compatible with non-buffered memory slots. They require specific memory slots designed to support buffered memory.
Registered Memory (also known as Registered DIMM or RDIMM):
1. Functionality: Registered memory modules have an additional register or buffer between the memory chips and the memory controller on the motherboard. The register helps in reducing electrical loading and enhancing signal integrity.
2. Signal transmission: The register isolates and controls the memory signals, improving the stability and integrity of the data transmission.
3. Capacity and speed: Registered memory modules can also support higher memory capacities and operate at higher speeds compared to regular unbuffered memory.
4. Latency: Similar to buffered memory, registered memory may have slightly higher latency due to the additional processing involved.
5. Compatibility: Registered memory modules are generally backward compatible with regular unbuffered memory slots. However, they may operate in a less optimized mode when used in such slots.
Overall, both buffered and registered memory are designed to improve signal integrity and support higher memory capacities. Buffered memory tends to offer higher performance and capacity, but it requires specific memory slots. Registered memory, on the other hand, offers similar benefits while being more compatible with regular memory slots. The choice between the two depends on the specific requirements of the system and the compatibility of the motherboard.

Orders for these parts are being monitored to ensure that only qualified replacement DIMMs are shipped for installation in the Sun Blade 150. Use the new part numbers shown above for replacement orders.
The Sun Blade 150 system uses a 168-pin, JEDEC standard, dual-in-line, 3.3V, unbuffered, synchronous DRAM module. The memory control unit (MCU) is embedded within the CPU. All address signals, control signals, and clocks are driven off of the processor and directly drive the memory subsystem on the motherboard. The CPU L2 cache megacell reserves a 4 Gbyte region for cacheable main memory. The memory controller only supports 4 Gbytes of space. Note –Although the cache and memory controller support up to 4 Gbytes, only 512 MB DIMMS are supported on the Sun Blade 150 system. This limits the maximum DIMM configuration to 2 Gbytes. The system has four DIMM slots on the motherboard. Because the memory data bus width is equal to the DIMMs (64-bit data, plus 8-bit ECC) they can be installed one at a time and with mixed sizes (...)

Und da steht u.a. beim Install Guide
This Sun™ ONE Application Framework Installation Guide describes the environment required and the steps you need to follow to install the Sun ONE Application Framework within the Sun™ ONE Studio.

Sun ONE was introduced on April 15, 2002, to supersede the iPlanet brand name, following the end of the Sun-Netscape alliance. Sun ONE itself was superseded on September 16, 2003 by the Sun Java System brand.

Sun Java Studio Standard 5 update 1 Product Library Documentation

Zitat von Sun Ultra 10 Just the Facts, p. 7The Ultra 10 workstation is the entry point of Sun’s high-performance graphics computing
systems. The Ultra 10 workstation provides optional UPA-based graphics cards and greater
PCI expansion, faster processing, and twice the memory capacity when compared to the
Ultra 5 workstation.
Target markets for this workstation include software development, MCAD, electronic design
automation, financial analysis, and modeling. With the installation of Sun Elite3D m6
graphics, the applications are extended to include animation, 3-D content creation, and
simulation.
Ausstattung:
- 1 x 360 MHz UltraSPARC-IIi CPU mit 256 KB L2 Cache
- 128 MB Hauptspeicher
- 8 GB interne Festplatte
- SunCD 32 CDROM-Laufwerk
- 1.44 MB Diskettenlaufwerk
- deutsches Country Kit
- Solaris 7 Release 3/99 vorinstalliert
Preis: 5547,70 DM
- Optionales Solaris 7 Desktop Media-Kit
Zzgl.: 293,00 DM
Alle Preise netto, bereits rabattiert, zzgl. 50 DM Versand.

EN0 - OFF
EN1 - ON
EN2 - OFF
256 - OFF
640 - OFF
1MB - OFF
MAP - ON
COL - ON

Dennoch: faszinierend.
Spät, ich schlafe schon beim Tippen ein. Gute Nacht.
Nachtrag: der Link muss einfach noch.
Support status of MP machines under SCO MPX, UNIX and ODT.

eBay Deutschland listet schon mal drei "387 40Mhz", zwei davon ca 20 EUR zzgl.

Was die Suchmachinen u.a. zu Sequent so ausspucken:
- https://www.nytimes.com/1986/0…-50-million-contract.html
- https://homepages.inf.ed.ac.uk/rni/comp-arch/Shmem/sb.html
Inteprozessor-Synchronisation bzw. Atomic Load/Store bzw Swap Ops, Cache Coherence, Bus Snooping) und Software (u.a.
Zitat von Cockcroft, Pettit (1998): Sun Performance and Tuning, Java and the Internet, 2nd Edition, ISBN 0-13-095249-4, Prentice Hall PTR, S. 237ffUNIX on Shared Memory Multiprocessors
The Unix kernel has many critical regions [...] must not be interrupted by a higher-priority interrupt service routine. A uniprocessor Unix kernel manages these regions by setting the interrupt mask to a high value while executing in the region. On a multiprocessor, there are other processors with their own interrupt masks, so a different technique must be used to manage critical regions.
The Spin Lock or Mutex
[...] ability to perform interprocessor synchronization my means of atomic load/store or swap instructions. [...] instruction is used to make mutual exclusion locks ([...] mutexes) that make sure only one processor at a time can hold the lock. [...] If a processor does not get the lock, then it may decide to spin by sitting in a loop and testing the lock until it becomes available. [...] the processor performs the spin within the cache, and bus snooping logic watches for the lock being cleared. [...] causes no bus traffic, so processors [...] not slow down those that are working. A spin lock is appropriate when the wait is expected to be short. If a long wait is expected, the process (Prozess!) should sleep for a while so that a different job can be scheduled onto the CPU. [...]
Code Locking
[...] The amount of actual concurrency that can take place in the kernel is controlled by the number and position of the locks.
[...] When code locking is used, there are a fixed number of locks [...] to characterize how much concurrency is available. [...] likely to become bottlenecks, so that adding extra processors will not help performance and may actually reduce performance.
Data Locking [...]
The problem with code locks is that different processors often want to use the same code to work on different data. To allow this use, locks must be placed in data structures rather than code. [...] requires an extensive rewrite of the kernel - one reason why Solaris 2 took several years to create. The result is that the kernel has a lot of concurrency available and can be tuned to scale well with large numbers of processors. [...] With data locking, there is a lock for each instance of a data structure. [...] There is a trade-off between having lots of mutexes for good MP scalability and few mutexes for reduced CPU overhead on uniprocessors.
Muss man schon etwas intensiver suchen.

[...]
Michael
Hallo Michael,
willkommen in Forum!
