PC geschenkt bekommen...Floppy-Tower Gedankenspiele...

    Hi, mir ist ein RIESIGER PC-Tower zugelaufen :) In dem könnte man jede Menge Laufwerke unterbringen.

    Das bringt mich zu einer Idee eine "Floppy-Station" aufzubauen.


    Gedankenspiele dazu:

    - 1x 3,5" Floppy 1,44MB vorhanden

    - 2x5,25" CD/DVD Laufwerke vorhanden

    - 3x5,25" HDD's bereits verbaut.

    - noch freie 5,25" Schächte vorhanden.


    Was wäre hiermit:

    - 5,25" Floppy 1,2 MB verbauen

    - 5,25" Floppy 360KB verbauen

    - 5,25" C64 Floppy verbauen

    - Zipdrive verbauen


    Welche Optionen hätte man, mehr als zwei Floppys zu verbauen?

    Da bräichte man doch einen weiteren Floppycontroller? Geht da auch einer der auf einer SCSI-Karte verbaut ist?

    Ein 1541 müsste ich ja intern über XA-Kabel anschließen.


    Vielleicht hat jemand sowas schonmal realisiert und kann hier ein paar Tips geben.

    Als Plattform dacht ich an einen PentiumMMX oder PII/III.

    Bei den gängigen Adaptec 1542 Controllern ist die Erweiterung auf vier Diskettenlaufwerke gut umsetzbar.

    Die verbauten FDC-Chips sind für vier Laufwerke ausgelegt.

    Man kann die erforderlichen Drive Select und Motor Signale abgreifen und direkt auf den Floppy-Bus legen, da die Chips die Leitungstreiber bereits eingebaut haben.

    Hat Schroeder gerade erst umgesetzt: 4 Diskettenlaufwerke am PC/AT

    Noch einfach geht das mit einem Seagate ST-02, der ist ab Werk dafür geeignet. Man muß lediglich die Stiftleiste für den zweiten Floppy-Anschluß einlöten.

    wie wärs mit einem zusätzlichen SqQuest - Laufwerk? - ein 88MB SCSI hätte ich noch über (incl. Medien)

    Neben diversen 4-Floppy-Controllern (ich verwende einen LCS) kann man auch leicht einen "Umschalter" bauen. Damit kann man zwei Floppies alternativ mit der gleichen Laufwerksnummer verwenden. Man muss nur das Drive Select entsprechend durchschalten bzw. unterbrechen. Bauanleitungen dazu findet man hier: https://www.seasip.info/VintagePC/floppies.html

    Ich habe das ebenfalls erfolgreich an einem PC umgesetzt, d.h. ich habe zwei verschiedene A-Laufwerke drin (3.5" und 5.25"). Nachteil ist, dass man in der Regel im Bios jeweils den richtigen Laufwerkstyp einstellen muss (sonst spricht der Controller das Laufwerk falsch an).

    Other operating systems

    Vintage OSes (CP/M-86, DOS Plus and so forth) will support the extra floppy drives if the BIOS supports them. There is no DRIVPARM or DRIVER.SYS equivalent which will allow you to override the BIOS.


    Windows 95 will grudgingly support more than two floppy drives, providing that the BIOS detected them. The third and fourth drive run in "MS-DOS compatibility mode".


    According to article 268084 in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, Windows 98 won't boot on a system with more than two floppy drives. I've tried on two PCs; on one, it did boot and behaved exactly like Windows 95, while on the other it crashed as described. This probably covers Windows ME as well.


    Windows NT (versions 3.1, 3.51, 4.00 and 2000) will support more than two floppy drives. Like MS-DOS, it gives the third and fourth drive letters after the hard drives. Whether this works in more recent versions of NT (XP, Win2003 server) I don't know. It is possible (using Disk Administrator) to change the letters used by the hard drive(s). If you move the hard drive down to E:, then the floppies will take A:, B:, C:, etc. But note that changing the letter of the system drive is not a recommended procedure. It's not so bad on NT 3.51, but NT 4 has drive letters hard coded in the Registry (wow, that was sensible) and some of the NT 3.1 control panels seem to assume that drive C: is a hard drive.


    Linux supports two controllers with up to four drives on each controller (though the controllers have to share the same IRQ and DMA setting). To set up the extra drives, you have to pass their types as parameters on the kernel command line. See /usr/src/linux/Documentation/floppy.txt.
